Winter weather has hit Amsterdam, causing its canals to fully freeze for the first time in 15 years. The Dutch are having a great time turning their city’s waterways into playgrounds and plazas, and are sharing their fun with the world via the internet. Imagine if Denver had a few canals, what fun we might have.

I once read about a developer a hundred years ago who had planned to build a New Amsterdam/Venice” style canal city out in Lakewood. Obviously it never panned out and i have never been able to find the original source since to research it further. Anyone ever read about this.
Also I think Sloane’s lake had a canal at one point, and there has been talks of turning 35th street and the Platte river into an urban canal.
We wouldn’t have any fun at all. The city, fearing massive lawsuits from bobble-headed fools falling through thin ice or otherwise avoidably injuring themselves, would cordone off all the canals and fine those who dared pass.
I guess I’m just not feeling particularly generous towards my fellow man today.
In the 1860s it was common for Denverites to go ice skating on frozen Cherry Creek.
